Reproductive Strategies Change With Time in a Newly Founded Colony of Spotless Starlings (Sturnus unicolor)

چکیده
Variation in avian reproductive strategies is often studied from a comparative perspective, since even closely-related taxa differ greatly the degree of polygyny, extra-pair paternity (EPP) or intra-specific brood-parasitism. However, substantial variation at species level suggests that ecological factors are important shaping these patterns. In this study, we examined temporal plasticity strategies, following population year colony formation to 2 years after this. Parentage data shows polygyny decreased with time, likely as consequence increased competition for nesting sites and mates by new recruits, immigrants higher quality arriving time passed. parallel change, found an increase brood-parasitism quasi-parasitism (QP). We interpret patterns floaters time; birds pursue mixture alternative mating succeed population. also evidence conspecific brood parasitism (CBP), females laid part clutch another nest losing partially resorted lay last eggs nest. Analyses distance between main nests containing secondary polygynous parasitic young showed avoidance contiguous conducting tactics. At same were closer than random distances within colony, suggesting access public information was restricted narrow area around Our study emphasizes how behavioral plastic traits vary not only individual circumstances, but tracking changes density social structure.

Blue-green eggshell coloration reflects yolk antioxidant content in spotless starlings Sturnus unicolor
The hypothesis that eggshell colouration is a sexually selected trait of female birds is based on the fact that biliverdin, the pigment responsible for blue-green colours of the eggshell, is a potent antioxidant and that only females with high antioxidant capacity can deposit higher concentrations of biliverdin as eggshell pigment. Antioxidants (e.g. carotenoids, vitamins) are also abundant in ...
متن کاملSexually selected egg coloration in spotless starlings.
It has been recently proposed that the blue-green coloration in eggs of many avian species may constitute a sexually selected female signal. Blue-green color intensity would reflect the physiological condition of females, and hence it might also affect the allocation of male parental care. In this study, we use three different experimental approaches to explore the importance of sexual selectio...
متن کاملShape from shading in starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).
Birds behave as if they quickly and accurately perceive an object-filled visual world. Beyond the extensive research with pigeons, however, there is a large and important gap in our knowledge about the mechanisms of object perception and recognition in other avian visual systems. The pattern of shading reflected from the surfaces of objects is one important optical feature that provides fundame...
متن کاملReproductive state modulates testosterone-induced singing in adult female European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).
European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) exhibit seasonal changes in singing and in the volumes of the neural substrate. Increases in song nuclei volume are mediated at least in part by increases in day length, which is also associated with increases in plasma testosterone (T), reproductive activity, and singing behavior in males. The correlations between photoperiod (i.e. daylength), T, reproduct...
متن کاملRepeatability of Clutch Size in Female Starlings (sturnus Vulgaris)
Theories of clutch size determination have focused on first broods or on seasonal trends in clutch size. Clutch size is controlled by combination of genetic, ontological and environmental factors (KENNEDY & WHITE, 1991). In recent years, an increasing number of studies have demonstrated the existence of significant repeatability in ecologically important traits in natural bird populations (e.g....
